Photo 4 – And what would a mid 70’s visit to ‘the Kap’ be without a photo or two of the Northlander? This ex. Trans-European Express, one of four purchased by Ontario Northland for the Toronto – Kapuskasing route, is enjoying center stage at the Kapuskasing Station in 1978. Both ends of the train were fitted with controls so it never had to be turned. This is the ‘non powered’ end of the train (note the passenger windows) facing east.
A couple of interesting items have been added to give an otherwise homely machine a typical Canadian look. The roof-mounted bell from an F unit is a nice touch. A wonder who thought of that? The radio antenna is also typical. The ‘ditch lights’ were a very new thing back in the ‘70’s and these were a hint of things to come.
Winter railroading conditions in Northern Ontario soon put an end to this experiment. They just don’t build them in Europe like we do.
