Scott Saskatchewan - On the cusp of a ghost town

The highway sign points to a community of 118 people (or less) living on the edge of being nowhere at all. See.. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=52.36495,-108.83376&z=15&t=h&hl=en As the elders die off and children and grand children refuse to give up their lives in the larger centers the nearby homes and smaller, unproductive farms are being sold off. I originally planned to focus on that slow, inevitable death but then I began to think of how people there simply make use of what is still available.

I’ve yet to see a model railroad of any scale where towns and villages were so prominently noted and yet signs like this are very common. Highway department distance and direction markers are even more common so how better to identify stops along your right of way. They suggest the mileage to the next spur or siding better than those small white boards on rail side telegraph posts. They add a little colour as well. Perhaps we get to wrapped up in railroading to see the rest of the world.
