The freight house in Kelowna

The Highway Department in Kelowna built this old building deep in the packing house and sawmill district on the far north end of town. The tracks run right next door and they still serve a fruit processing company, a cement plant and a plywood and lumber mill. Still, I couldn’t resist thinking of this as a single stall engine house of the Colorado narrow gauge variety. The colour was pretty much correct, although experts may debate that, and the tin corrugated roof seems designed to keep off the heavy mountain snow. Certainly not an issue here in this semi desert region of BC. You can see at the link that I made a few small changes to suit my space.

The present users, a small boat repair company, have been given their notice. Ironically, this old building will soon be gone because the highway, behind and on the right, is being widened to accommodate the cities rapid growth. I’m glad I caught it in time.
