With a full crew now safely on board the 5604 throttles up through the intersection and past the flashing lights and the lowered crossing gate. Finding a gate like this while we were close to the middle of nowhere was a bit of a surprise. Other, much busier, rail crossings in the area were unprotected except for a traditional wooden crossbuck. It turns out this rural grid road is an important school bus route and so warranted the automatic installation. These simple crossing guards are readily available in most popular scales and you can even build them for yourself in the larger sizes. And don’t be shy about placing them out in the sticks. There can be unseen reasons to have them just about anywhere - and operators and visitors love them.
