WINTER VALLEY REGIONAL RAILWAY

Just a stop along the road can sometimes lead to an interesting encounter – and some fine train pictures as well.

14 September 2006, Scott Saskatchewan. Weather: Nasty. With a cold wind blowing in a heavy, almost continuous, rain turning to snow. Canadian National SD70l No 5604 and her crew were held facing west in a long siding waiting for oncoming priority traffic. Their orders to proceed would come only when they saw the last car of ‘Q’ train 112. The Vancouver/Toronto Intermodal. The hottest train on the line.

Note that while the track and ballast are in pristine, main line condition they’re built up only slightly above the surrounding landscape. No classic model railway track profile here. Perhaps two or three feet at the most, and even that over a long gentle slope. Tall grasses push right up to the ties because chemical sprays are no longer tolerated and the prairie wind can be counted on to remove the coming snow.
