Are trestles relegated to the mountains? Are wooden trestles a thing of the past? This trestle crosses the Thunder Creek just south of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. You can still see the small outboard platforms that hold the water barrels. All this, on CN’s active Avonlea Sub, in the fall of 1984. You can see that much of the small valley has been filled in with earth and rock but still keeping the trestle to a respectable length. All kinds of factors weigh into filling in or replacing a wooden trestle today. The weight of the trains, the condition of the wood, the cost of replacement vs. the income from the line all play a part. If you look around there are surely some lest even today so don’t be afraid to build one for your shortline railway
